Product Review: Janome 8077 Sewing Machine

Janome-8077The Janome 8077 is another work horse from one of the best names in sewing. A friend allowed me to try out her machine when my oldest daughter and I were both working on a project. My sewing machine is not built for sewing on multiple layers of heavy fabric. I took advantage of the loaner and hemmed jeans, mended a backpack and stitched some heavy plastic sheeting into row covers for my garden. I love my Brother sewing machine, but I did not want to give the Janome back.

Not only will this machine power through multiple layers of fabric without breaking a sweat, it sews beautifully on delicate fabrics as well. While I prefer the control of the foot pedal, it didn’t take me long to get a feel for the manual start/stop control. At the time, one of the nicest things about the machine was that it was light enough to carry around since my sewing table was in use! If I was in need of another basic machine, I would absolutely consider the Janome 8077.

Stitching Features

Janome-8077-LCD-screen

Easy Stitch Selection
The Janome 8077 has an easy to read stitch display panel that matches each stitch to the presser foot that should be used in sewing that stitch. This is especially handy for those of us who don’t stray far from straight and zigzag stitches even after years of sewing. The bright LED display shows which stitch you have selected and moving between stitches is a matter of pressing the “+” or “-” button.

6 One-Step Buttonholes
With 6 one-step automatic buttonholes, you get all the buttonhole designs you will ever need for garments. I’ve said before in other reviews how much I dreaded making buttonholes with my old zigzag Singer. I wound up guestimating wrong far too often and wound up with really uneven buttonholes. Sewing is a lot more fun when the tedious tasks are automated.

30 Utility and Decorative Stitches
Thirty stitches is all most of us will ever need and more than some of us will ever use. The 7mm stitch width will produce an eye-popping satin stitch that is especially nice for edging appliques.

Auto Lock Stitch Button
This feature is especially handy when using the decorative stitches. It allows you to sew at your chosen speed and still complete one iteration of a selected decorative stitch. This gives you a beautiful, professional finished look to the decorative stitches you apply to garments, crafts and other sewing projects.

Reverse Stitch
Secure the end of each seam at the touch of a button. No more manually positioning the needle down and pivoting your fabric to lock in a seam. This is a huge time saver, especially for those of us who remember doing it the old fashioned way!

Additional Features

Heavy Duty
This machine is lightweight enough to carry around and heavy duty enough to hold steady as it stitches through multiple layers of fabric without skipping a stitch.

Easy Speed Setting
There are times when sewing at top speed is desirable and there are times when you’re working on intricate piecing and you want the machine to operate at a slower speed to give you more control. The speed slider allows you to quickly change the maximum sewing speed so you don’t have to worry about an accidental heavy foot on the pedal rushing you through delicate work.

Needle Up/Down
Sometimes it is the simplest feature that prevents the biggest headaches. If you’ve ever forgotten to lower the needle on your machine  prior to pivoting your fabric you know exactly what I mean. The needle up/down button is right in my line of sight, so I don’t forget to lower the needle before lifting the presser foot.Superior-Feed-System

Button or Foot pedal Control
Offering a way to sew with a foot pedal or by manually stopping and starting the machine at the touch of a button is a great convenience to many buyers. One reviewer mentioned finding the stop/star buttons convenient after a foot injury made it difficult to use the foot pedal for long periods of time.

7 Piece Superior Feed System

This may be one of the most important features offered on the Janome 8077 when sewing through multiple layers of fabric. The feed dogs make contact with the fabric in seven different places and feeds it evenly under the needle helping create smooth, even stitches without puckering.

Green-ArrowFirst time machine buyer Loves It!
I had NO experience with sewing before buying this machine; I didn’t even know that you needed both a bobbin thread and the needle thread… that tells you how little I knew. I just knew that I wanted to give machine quilting a try and after reading the reviews found that this one was considered a ‘workhorse’ and was actually the same machine as the Janome Magnolia, but without the decals and labeling as such (and after reading the Magnolia reviews I was sold). The manual is so easy to follow that I was up and sewing within an hour…

Green-ArrowAwesome Sewing Machine for the Money!
I purchased this sewing machine as a gift for my grand-children. When it arrived, I checked it out to make sure it worked well and was a good machine for them. I read the manual to learn about its’ features and made all the stitches on a scrap of material. The machine is quiet, runs smoothly and makes beautiful stitches, plus it is lightweight and easy to transport.

I was so thrilled that I kept raving, to my husband, about what a great little machine it is. In fact, I liked it so much, I decided to keep it for myself and I had to order another one for my grandchildren…

Disappointed in the manual
The manual could be a little more helpful.

Bottom Line

Janome is the largest manufacturer of sewing machine and produces some of the most reliable machines on the market. I enjoyed all the conveniences built into this machine. The auto threader, easy stitch selection, snap on presser feet and auto stitch lock allowed me to move quickly and easily from the different stages of the projects I worked on and I didn’t have to worry about whether the machine would jam, a needle would break or a stitch would be skipped when I was sewing through multiple layers of fabric. The Janome 8077 is a quality sewing machine suitable for any experience level.

My mother taught me to sew when I was a little girl and I've been sewing for over 40 years. Sometimes I sew out of necessity and sometimes just for the sheer joy of creating something new. I am mom to two wonderful teen daughters and wife to a very patient man. When I'm not sewing or writing, I can be found in my garden. Ask me how it grows!
