Singer Sewing Machines

As one of the oldest sewing machine manufacturers around the Singer Company has gained household recognition and has become synonymous with sewing. Known as the Singer Company since 1963, it is currently based in La Vergne, Tennessee near Nashville.

Singer Corporation was first established as I.M. Singer & Co. in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer, inventor and entrepreneur. Although Singer did not invent the sewing machine, he did improve on its design. After noting that older machines were either impractical or inefficient he devised many significant improvements in design, such as a needle that moved up and down rather than side to side, effectively saving time, money and promoting greater ease of use. The first Singer sewing machines were manufactured in New York and sold for $100 each in 1853.

Some of the older Singer Vintage Sewing Machines, such as the 1950 Singer Featherweight, are considered workhorses that have withstood the test of time.

Since celebrating 160 years in 2011 Singer has achieved many firsts in sewing machine history including: the world’s first zig-zag machine, the first electronic machines, the world’s first computer-controlled model, the Touchtronic, in 1978, the world’s most advanced home combination embroidery and sewing machines equipped with state of the art technology, as well as products for every level of sewing experience. Singer has come a long way since grandma’s machine.
