Looking for online sewing classes to sew your own clothes and things? Well sewing your own clothes is economical and results in garments that are often better made than those found on store shelves. Another huge benefit of sewing your own clothes is being able to fit them perfectly to your frame. Don’t know how to sew? Not a problem! There are plenty of resources – free and subscription – available to you right in the comfort of your own home. Another piece of great news for those who would like to take up sewing is that the price of basic sewing machines has pretty much stayed the same for many years. You can head over to Amazon and find great deals on sewing machines that run the gamut – from beginner to professional. Owning a basic sewing machine will pay for itself even if all you ever use it for are basic hemming, minor alterations and mending jobs. If you want to get started and aren’t quite sure how, take a look at our sewing machine reviews and suggestions on how to buy a sewing machine for beginners. Once you own a sewing machine you’re ready to get started. Luckily there are several resources on the web with excellent inventories of projects and step-by-step instructions. Some of my favorite sites are listed below.

Craftsy.com is now MyBluprint.com

If you’ve done any sewing at all then you’re probably familiar with Craftsy.com. Craftsy started in July of 2011 as a beautiful site offering online classes and workshops. In December of 2017 it became Craftsy Unlimited, offering an unlimited streaming subscription service option. Finally, as of this writing, Craftsy rebranded as Bluprint to offer subscribers a more rounded creative experience and of course their subscription service.

The site boasts a large selection of patterns and projects from which to choose as well as “Own Forever” stand-alone classes to make your next creative masterpiece. And of course they offer their subscription service as well. I, myself, have purchased several of their classes including Sew Ready: Machine Basics with Amy Alan ,  Sewing Designer Jeans with Angela Wolf and many others. They are high quality and very professional courses.  A great class for a beginner or someone who would like a refresher is 20 Things To Know Before You Sew.

One of my favorite things about Craftsy/MyBluprint.com is that the site attracts a lot of indie designers, so the patterns available aren’t just a collection of all those you’ve seen in crafts magazines over the years. This makes MyBluprint.com as valuable a resource to those of us with experience as it is for those just starting out. Another thing I like about This site is that I do more than sew. I also knit, crochet, make dolls and stuffed animals, make wire work jewelry…you name it!

The pattern prices are usually quite inexpensive and the designers are responsive if you have questions. As I was looking for a sewing project  the sewing pattern I wound up buying  is this wonderfully simply draped top. I just bought my daughter a silk top similar to this on sale for $35 for an interview. Now that I’ve found the pattern I will make her a couple more tops in different colors. The beauty of this pattern is it covers sizes SX through XXL for one price. Classes are available in a lot of different crafting and sewing techniques. The prices vary, but the featured sewing classes are currently running $49.99 with a few at $39.99. They get very good reviews and you can learn anything from basic beginner sewing projects to advanced tailoring methods.

And don’t forget to download the App on your phone! It’s free and you can watch anytime! I love it!

CreativeLiveCreativeLive

CreativeLive is another site that I enjoy. If you have any form of creative energy hiding or stifled inside you this site, they say,  wants to unleash that creator in you. They offer 1,500+ classes ranging from fundamentals to advanced techniques including classes in Photo & Video; Money & Life; Art & Design; Craft & Maker and Music & Audio. You can take a look at what they offer for sewing classes here or look around and see if something else interests you. They have a bunch of other needlecraft classes under Craft & Maker as well.

One of the classes I purchased was Fashion Design: Start to Finish with Jay Calderin.  Jay was my sketching instructor at the School of Fashion Design in Boston. I was really happy to see him teaching here. His classes and teaching style are excellent and always very well put together. He gives you the Inspiration for project runway creations! 🙂

As with all the classes you can view a selection of classes for free. You also have the option to buy stand-alone classes or purchase a monthly or yearly subscription. Just keep in mind that if you choose the subscription, which is fun, 🙂  you no longer have access to the classes you didn’t purchase if you decide to cancel.

These are some of my favorite online sewing classes. They’re very convenient to access and you have a wide variety to choose from!

Please come back because we will be adding more! Enjoy the sites and let us know what you are making in the comments below.
